The Importance of a Cat Car Carrier

I am a huge proponent of keeping cats safely secured in a carrier when traveling in the car. Not only is it illegal in some states and countries for a pet to be loose in a moving vehicle, it is downright dangerous.

No matter how well-behaved your cat may be, no matter how much they may hate riding in a carrier, and no matter how good of a driver you are, there is ALWAYS the risk that you might get into a car accident. There is always the risk that you might have to slam on your breaks. There is always the risk that your cat might get spooked and claw you or get under your feet.

According to American Humane a 10-pound cat becomes 500 pounds of projectile force if in a car accident at 50mph. That’s insane! So for the safety of everyone–you, your cat, and everyone else on the road–restrain your cat in a covered car carrier (NOT a booster seat or tether).

About Sleepypod

Sleepypod is a US-based company that makes carriers, safety harnesses, leashes, collars, harnesses, and other pet travel products. Made with high quality materials in lots of stylish colors, their products are designed with both your pet’s safety and comfort in mind.

Though their products are definitely eye-catching, where they truly stand out from the crowd is with their safety standards. All of Sleepypod’s carriers and safety harnesses are put through rigorous crash testing through the Center for Pet Safety (third-party) to ensure they will keep your cat as safe as possible while on the road.

From the “About Sleepypod” video on their website:

“You shouldn’t have to guess about the safety of your pet’s products. Sleepypod products are thoughtfully made for more comfortable, safer living with your furry best friends. From the tensile testing of our leash and collar lines to the crash testing of our carrier and harness lines at U.S., Canadian, and E.U. child safety seat standards, Sleepypod devotes careful and caring attention to each detail in every product.”

They make a wide range of products for cats, including:

I’ve personally used and loved the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed, Sleepypod Air, and the Martingale Harness. However, I’ll just be reviewing the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed in this post.

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed Specs & Features

Many cats struggle with getting comfortable riding in a carrier. The enclosed space doesn’t help, but couple that with the fact that they typically associate the carrier with negative experiences (like going to the vet), and you’ve got a recipe for stress and fear.

One of the coolest things about the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is that it is both a carrier and a bed – just like the name implies. The mesh-dome top is removable, and the inside is lined with ultra plush bedding that makes for a super comfortable bed.

That means you can easily leave the bed out in your home for your cat to nap in and use on a regular basis. Then when it comes time to add the top back on to go somewhere, your cat won’t be as stressed because they’re getting to travel in the comfort of their bed.

Not only is travel less stressful with the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed, but so are vet visits! Your vet may very well even be able to perform most, if not all, of your cat’s exam without having to take them out of the carrier. Just remove the dome top, and your kitty is easily reachable and accessible for their exam from the comfort of their bed.

Plus, the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed has been thoroughly crash-tested and CPS certified (more on that later).

  • Dimensions (with dome): 17 inches across (diameter) and 13.5 inches tall
  • Interior dimensions (with dome): 15 inches across (diameter) x 11.5 inches tall

What It Means to Be CPS Certified

I’ve mentioned it a few times already, but it’s worth repeating: the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed—and all of Sleepypod’s carriers and safety harnesses—are CPS-certified. That means these products have been put through and passed an intensive crash testing process conducted by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS).

The Center for Pet Safety is a third-party, non-profit “safety science organization dedicated to consumer and companion animal safety.” They research pet products, test travel safety gear under real-world conditions, and advocate for higher safety standards across the industry. Their goal is to reduce the risk of injury and ensure pet owners can trust the gear they use.

CPS certification involves independent, standardized testing—the same kind used for child safety restraints in the U.S., Canada, and the EU. Sleepypod voluntarily submitted their carriers to this testing process, and the Mobile Pet Bed passed with flying colors.

You can even watch the official crash test of the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed here:

In my podcast interview with CPS founder Lindsey Wolko, she explained that many brands claim their products are “crash tested,” even if they didn’t actually pass any tests—or they do their own testing using biased, non-standard methods. That’s why the CPS Certified label is so important. It tells you that a product has gone through the most demanding testing process available—and passed.

If a pet carrier is CPS Certified, you can trust it with your cat’s life. I know I do.

My Experience Using the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Before discovering Sleepypod in 2015, I used to let my cats free roam in the car. I was young, naive, and simply didn’t know any better. On frequent trips to and from my parents’ house, Delilah would curl up in my lap while Sampson lounged across my shoulders. They never misbehaved, and at the time, it felt harmless.

Thankfully, I never experienced an accident—but I began hearing stories from others who had, and it opened my eyes to how risky and irresponsible it was to travel with unrestrained pets. That realization led me to research safer options, which is how I found Sleepypod. I’ve been using their products ever since.

What I love about the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed:

  • The peace of mind knowing my cats are traveling in the safest cat carrier
  • High-quality materials that hold up over the years
  • A plush lining that’s machine-washable
  • Fun, vibrant color options
  • And most importantly, how much my cats genuinely love it

We now have several Sleepypods scattered around the house—some with the tops off, some unzipped—and it’s not unusual to find a cat curled up in one, fast asleep. They treat them like cozy beds, not carriers.

Sophie, in particular, has had a transformation. She used to be a nightmare in the car, crying nonstop from the moment we started moving. But once she started traveling in a Sleepypod, everything changed. Now she rides calmly, enjoying the view through the mesh dome top from the comfort of her favorite bed.

If she ever goes missing in the house, we always check the Sleepypods first—she’s usually snuggled up inside one. And when we pull one out to go somewhere, she climbs right in, ready to go.

The only real drawback is the size limit—it’s designed for pets up to 15 pounds, which thankfully works for our crew who are all under 10 pounds. The round shape can also make it a little awkward to carry, but it’s roomy and well-suited to how cats naturally curl up, so it’s a fair tradeoff.

While I haven’t had to test its crash protection in a real accident (and I hope I never do), I trust the Sleepypod completely. It’s made a tremendous difference in both the safety and comfort of our cats during car rides and vet visits.
